Dining Out Japanese Tips

  • For the lightest appetizers, go for miso soup, a house salad with ginger dressing, seaweed salad or edamame. As for dumplings, go with steamed shrimp ones over fried pork dumplings.
  • Sushi (vinegared rice prepared with seaweed, raw fish and/or veggies) and sashimi (raw fish) are good low-fat, high-protein choices. Many sushi bars will prepare your sushi with brown rice if they have it--always opt for brown rice over white if available.
  • Avoid rolls such as spider rolls (fried soft-shell crab), shrimp tempura rolls and rolls prepared with high-fat ingredients like cream cheese.
  • For cooked food, ask that your dish is prepared without oil.
  • Avoid anything tempura! Deep-fried and battered means lots of calories for little food.
  • Go easy on soy and teriyaki sauces as well as miso dressing. While low in fat they are all high in sodium, which can make you feel bloated. Get these sauces and dressings on the side whenever possible and ask for low-sodium soy sauce as well.

About Benihana

We all know the deal by now.  Pull up a chair at Benihana, and you’re in for a meal prepared by a knife-wielding, joke-telling hibatchi chef.  He’ll throw a shrimp for you to catch in your mouth, make a volcano out of fried rice, and add about a stick of butter to everything he is cooking.  The forks in your hand people! Since you have the advantage of watching your food be prepared, you can dictate exactly how much (or little) butter you want added to your meal.  Leave the belly to Buddha, and enjoy your meal simply grilled.
